The Lovers of Beaucaire

Adapted from the 14th century chante fable (sung story) Aucassin & Nicolette, this funny, beautiful and romantic musical has had a long and varied life. It was first presented in 1976  at the Company Theater, Los Angeles where it ran to rave reviews.  It was picked up by Franklin R. Levy and produced by him and by Roger Berlind, first in San Francisco, then the Ford’s Theatre in Washington, DC; it finally landed on Broadway in 1978.  After it closed, it was published by Samuel French and is still popular with high schools across the United States. In 2005, the Red Thread Collective theater in Sana Fe, New Mexico asked Toni & Stephen Downs to help them remount the show for their summer season; Toni and Stephen took the opportunity to rewrite the show and the end result was a thrilling  evening in the theater in the company of star-crossed lovers, warring fathers, murderous henchmen, knights, nuts, randy shepherds, pirates, gypsies, a warrior queen and one very weird witch.  You could say that it’s like Romeo & Juliet with a lower body count.
